“THIS IS HUGE,” WUMI’S manager, Kike shouted above the music.

Wumi nodded. “Yes, yes, it is.”

“I saw Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde and loads of other celebs. And TuFace is going to be performing at the end.”

“I love TuFace!”

“He’s great.”

Floodlights stood strategically at different points on the beach, bathing drink-laden tables and occupied chairs with its light. Overhead the canopy of dark blue sky unfurled its galaxy of shining stars to salute the abundance of VIPs below while the breeze from the ocean cooled their skins and the grains of sand warmed their feet.

“The Governor of Lagos State is here,” Kike said.

“Yes, I know. I greeted him earlier, a few minutes after he arrived, and I also said hi to the Commissioner in charge of Tourism.”

“You know a lot of people.”

She shrugged. “A few. I got a chance to speak to one of the big boys in the advertising industry. I landed an appointment for Tuesday. Maybe I can get some of our models hired for their ads.”

“Good job, Wumi.”

A cheer went up from the audience as the artiste who had been singing a catchy tune segued into a feet-stomping rap.

Beside her, Kike whooped with the rest of them.

“I’m going to take a walk around.” She brought her head close to her manager’s ear.

“Okay, I’ll be here.”

Running a hand through her wavy hair, she strolled across the sand, behind the tables and chairs. Only one walk-through to check if he was here.

The second time around, she couldn’t deny it any longer. He hadn’t come.

It was time to return to Kike.

And then, oops. She bumped into someone.

A woman with full, light-brown curls above a heart-shaped face, clothed in a black top over blue skinny jeans.

“Sorry,” Wumi murmured.

“No worries, Wumi,” the woman said.

Wumi’s forehead wrinkled. This woman knew her name. “Have we met?”

“No, but I know you. I’m Tari Johnson, the Public Service Director, based in Abuja, for Glow Force Media.”

Glow Force Media. Dare. Was he here too? Her heart quickened.

Tari smiled. “He’s here.”

Her heart rate tripled. But she had to play it cool for this stranger’s benefit. “Who?”

Lifting a brow, she just stared at Wumi.

Feeling like a fool, she glanced into the crowd, away from this excruciatingly beautiful woman who worked with Dare. Ugh.

“If you want, I can take you to him,” Tari offered.

“Fine,” Wumi mumbled.

She followed Tari to a table. Three guys sat around it, one of whom was her ex-boyfriend.

“Hot Chocolate, I brought you a gift,” Tari said.

He glanced up at Tari and then his gaze swung to Wumi. His eyes widened.

Jumping to his feet, Dare exclaimed, “Wumi! I didn’t know you’ll be here.”

She raised and lowered one shoulder. “Well, I am. So were you planning on sneaking into and out of Lagos and not letting anyone know?” Her tone was accusatory.

“I’m in Lagos only for the day. I’ll be leaving tomorrow morning. And I didn’t think you’d expect me to phone you. I wasn’t even meant to attend the show except Tari pressured me into accompanying her. She’s very persuasive.”

“And very beautiful,” she added.
